Building a Product for SMEs

Today’s post is not so much about technology as it is about product building. I have been getting advice from a mentor recently. Having a mentor to help you see yourself the mistakes you are making and correct them is great. I wholeheartedly recommend one.

I’m wondering about two potential products. One is a scaled down mobile CRM interface. A SME could come to us and we could build them a mobile interface with just the information they need. Currently my expertise is in the MS Dyanmics CRM. So that is the first area we’d look at. Though there’s nothing stopping us from building ones for SugarCRM, Salesforce et al.

The other is a micro-BI product which focuses on specific customer trends in your data and finds groups of customers. That is it locates, say, your best customer – customers that buy regularily, customers that used to buy from you but buy no longer, customers that have shrunk their average order size, and customers that have enlarged their order size as well as locating old customers, who could become new leads. My intention is then to tie that into a marketing tool for focused marketing.

This is really hard work for a geek. For someone who spends 90% of his day infront of a computer, this really is hard. It requires me to find new customers who are willing to help us develop one, or both, or these products.

This really is hard work for me. A new way of doing things. But its the only way forward. Remaining as a programmer all my life is not something I intend to do.
